Britain's highest mountain via a classic and historical ascent route. The Mountain Path is the way the vast majority of visitors will ascend this fine peak and can be a challenge in summer and winter. With quickly changing weather and an ascent taking you from almost sea level to the summit itself, no cafes or railway, this can be a truly wild experience.
Our highly experienced and qualified instructors and guides will help you attempt to climb Ben Nevis giving you the best chance of success and hopefully providing a fun and fulfilling day on Britain's highest mountain.
The first recorded ascent of Ben Nevis was by James Robertson in 1771. Ben Nevis was only officially confirmed as the highest peak in Britain in 1847. Until that point the Ordnance Survey had believed the highest peak in Britain to be Ben Macdui in the Cairngorms National Park.
Today one can still find the remains of number of structures on the summit of Ben Nevis. Many of these, are remnants of the meteorological observatory which was built in 1883 and remained in service for 21 years. The path which people follow to the summit today is largely a part of the original track built so that ponies could carry supplies up to the observatory. That said, the John Muir Trust in collaboration with the Nevis Landscape Partnership and the various landowners are responsible for the maintenance and re-wilding of the Ben Nevis and Glen Nevis area today.
donate to protect
To help maintain, protect and sustainably develop this fantastic mountain for future generations we would kindly ask anyone who joins us on an ascent of Ben Nevis, does so under their own steam, or just has a passion for wild places, donate to the Nevis Landscape Partnership. Without their work this wild space would be a shadow of it's former self.
